When you’re refurbishing your house, one common strategy is to work room by room. This means that you always have a habitable part of your home to spend time in while work is underway.
It also allows you to focus on the larger projects first, then move on to smaller refurbishments and improvements.
When it comes to your living room, you want to create an environment that is comfortable and cosy. After all, this is where you relax and socialise, so it should be welcoming and suit your style perfectly.
Install a Fireplace in your Living Room
One great way to level up your living room is to add a fireplace. Fireplaces are a wonderful addition to any house. They add an extra source of heat and comfort in the winter, and are even a nice decorative feature at other times of the year. My house would have originaly had fire places, but at some point in the past they were removed and bricked up. I recently bought a traditional fire surround from Facebook Marketplace and have been restoring, though will be purely decorative.
If your home has a chimney, adding a fireplace is a relatively simple addition. Otherwise, you can add a fireplace that doesn’t need a chimney, but still provides the warmth, light, and the beauty of an ordinary fireplace.
If you like the idea of a traditional fireplace, it will be a larger job to add a chimney as well. But this can boost the value of your home and it’ll be worth it in the long run.
Living Room Floors and Ceilings
People might not spend a lot of time looking up and down, but this doesn’t mean there’s no point in paying attention to the floors and ceilings of your home. They add character and personality, and they can also be practical additions.
Explore different options and find ones that work for your family and preferences. When it comes to floors, think about how easy and practical they will be to clean and keep in good repair.
Living Room Walls
The walls of your home can say a lot, and you can either use them as a neutral blank canvas or a way to express yourself even more.
Plain and bright colours are a great way to make your house seem larger and cooler in the summer. You can add wall art to add plenty of personality. A fresh coat of paint often makes your home seem cleaner and brighter, and is a quick, cheap, and easy way to improve the room. It’s especially budget-friendly if you manage to paint it yourself.
Another option is to go loud and proud with your walls. Wallpaper is great for this, as well as some brighter or more unusual colors of paint. You can add a feature wall or make all of the walls more interesting, according to your tastes.
Living Room Furnishing
This is also a great opportunity to change the layout of your living room and move the furniture around. If it still seems a bit bare even after you’ve put the large items of furniture in, consider smaller decorative items and soft furnishings.
Rugs are great for breaking up empty space, and throws and cushions both make chairs and sofas even more comfortable.
