How to Develop Your Own Unique Style

Updated: Jul 17

Stuck in a style rut? Maybe you’ve never had your own unique style that you really love in the first place? Whatever your reasons, it is totally possible to develop a new, unique style that is totally you, at any age or stage of your life. Here’s how.

1. Spy on Your Own Closet

Start by playing detective in your own wardrobe. What do you actually wear? Not what you think you should wear, or what Instagram tells you to wear, but what do you reach for time and again? Modest dress? Denim? Lots of tailored trousers? These are your sartorial soulmates. Start here. Your future style icons might just be hiding between that band tee and the weird, yet intriguing vintage coat you bought on a whim.

2. Mood Board Your Life

Create a mood board. This can be a physical board, a Pinterest account, or a stack of magazine cutouts. Gather images, colours, textures, and anything else that catches your eye. Over time, you’ll start to see a pattern emerge—this is the visual DNA of your personal style. Love neon and leather? Great! Obsessed with pastel goth? Rock it!

3. What’s Your Story?

Every style has a narrative. Are you a minimalist ninja? A bohemian rhapsodist? Or maybe you’re channeling '90s sitcom nostalgia? Decide the story you want to tell the world with your clothes. Remember, every scarf, every ring, and every ridiculous hat is a chapter of your story.

4. Experiment Like a Mad Scientist

Now, the fun part: experimentation. Mix that floral dress with combat boots, or pair an elegant blazer with distressed jeans. Fashion should be a playground, not a high-security prison. Throw the rulebook out the window and start mixing and matching. Sometimes, the most iconic styles are born from the most unexpected combinations.

5. Shop Outside the Box

Big-box retailers? Nope, it’s time to go treasure hunting. Dive into thrift stores, vintage shops, and markets. Online platforms like Etsy, Vinted and Depop are your friends, too. These places are goldmines for unique pieces that can define a look. Remember, style is about expression, not labels.

6. Accessorise Wisely

Accessories are the exclamation points of personal style! A funky pair of glasses, statement jewellery, or an unconventional bag can elevate your style. Think of accessories as the spice rack in your styling kitchen—just a little can change the whole flavor.

7. Ignore Fashion ‘Rules’

Mix prints and metals. Socks with sandals? Why not—if you can rock it with confidence, you’re winning. Fashion ‘rules’ are more like guidelines, and breaking them often leads to the most head-turning styles. Be bold, be different, be you.

8. Gather Feedback, but Don’t Be a Slave to It

It’s good to know what others think, especially if they have an eye for style. But at the end of the day, wear what makes you happy. Your style should make you feel like the best version of yourself, whether you're lounging at home or strutting down a busy street.

Creating your unique style is more of a long journey than a short trip, and it may take some serious experimentation, and more than a few fashion disasters, before you get there, but it will be worth it when you can always look in the mirror and smile.
