I can't lie, my back garden is definitely in need of some TLC. It has so much potential, but it’s not got a purpose or direction at the moment, it’s time to change that once and for all, so it's definitely on my list of things to do.
There are so many little things you can do to add greater functionality and purpose to your own garden, and I'm going to talk about some of the best of those ideas today. Read on...
Work with the Proportions of Your Space
First of all, you need to make sure that you’re working with the proportions of your space. You don’t want to overload the space with one particular thing if you know that you don’t really have the room for it. You also don’t want to add too much to a small garden. If you have a bigger garden, you can fit more in. But that’s something that you’ll have to decide on.
Pay More Attention to Landscaping and Boundaries
It’s a good idea to look at the boundaries of your garden the same way you would look at the walls of your home. You want them to look nice, neat and presentable. So if the edges are a bit messy and the boundaries aren’t properly defined, that’s something that you can definitely start to work on. Pay more attention to these things and the garden will immediately start to look more presentable.
Use Variety in the Design
Using greater variety, maybe by adding different zones to the garden is definitely a good idea. You could have an area for plants and flowers, then the lawn, and maybe a vegetable patch. We’ll talk about that last one later. Then you might create another zone that’s all about relaxation and taking it easy with friends, so that’s where you’ll want some comfortable seating options.
Install a Gazebo for Covered Outdoor Dining
Installing a gazebo might be a good idea if you want to make better use of your outdoor dining area as well. That way, you’ll have a little shelter and shade if you allow some climbing plants to create a canopy overhead. There are plenty of gazebo design options out there, so be sure to do some research and find out which of them is going to be right for you.
Create a Vegetable Garden
A good vegetable garden is one the best ways to give real purpose and functionality to your garden space if that’s something that it’s currently lacking somewhat. There’s something deeply rewarding about growing your own vegetables and knowing they're organic. It’s the perfect remedy to a garden that does nothing and serves no other purpose.
So if you’re looking to add greater functionality to your back garden, you need to make the most of the ideas discussed above. Making the right changes now will ensure your garden is in the shape you want it to be by the time the spring and summer roll around again.
