When it comes to your health and wellbeing, your bedroom is arguably the most important room in the home. Sleep scientists are continually telling us how important it is for us to get at least seven hours of shut-eye per night - and possibly more.
Unfortunately, quite often the rooms in which we sleep are not fit for purpose. They’re noisy, polluted with light and don’t provide enough functionality. In other words, they’re bad for our health. The good news, though, is that you can quickly turn things around with a few well-placed upgrades.
Blackout Curtains
I'm lucky that my bedroom is not overlooked and I like to leave the curtains open at night to wake up naturally with the sunlight. However if you live in a busy city, you can forget regular curtains. When it comes to preventing light from coming into the bedroom, they’re practically useless. Blackout curtains, on the other hand, are entirely different. These puppies have a thick material construction that deflects almost all incoming light, meaning that street lamps outside your home won’t keep you awake all night. Furthermore, blackout curtains also stop the sun from coming in through your curtains too early in the norming during summer months, allowing you to sleep in longer when you are tired.
Segmented Wardrobes
A lot of people are still using old-fashioned wardrobes to store all their belongings. If you don’t have many clothes or shoes, then it’s okay. But the moment your collection starts to expand, you run into problems.
Segmented wardrobes get around this issue by providing space for all your clothes and accessories, no matter what you own. What’s more, they tend to run along the entire wall, making the best possible use of space. All your outfits are available to hand, not vacuum-packed away somewhere in the loft.
Add Luxury Bedding
The whole purpose of your bedroom is to provide you with a private space where you can sleep. But if your bedding is subpar, then you’ll struggle to get that cosy feeling you need before you drop off into a deep slumber.
The good news is that there is a simple solution: add luxury bedding. Premium options are infinitely more comfortable than their entry-level counterparts, providing denser, smoother fibres that feel great to the touch.
The best beds also use a variety of textures to create the desired experience. You could have silk sheets topped off with faux-fur throws and a down duvet.
Add A Desk
Keeping all your makeup and accessories in a pot on your bedside table isn’t ideal. Before long, mascara bottles and vials of essential oils are all over the floor and rolling under your bed. What you need is a piece of furniture explicitly designed to conveniently store all of your cosmetics, helping you avoid clambering around under the bed to find all the materials you need to get ready.
Well, it turns out that something along those lines really does exist - and it’s called a vanity. You know the drill. You sit down in front of the mirror, and all your makeup and hair clips are easily accessed via a series of drawers in the unit.
So what about your bedroom? Is it time you upgraded it?
